This young Blenheim bitch was Breed type personified. I first look at my entries from across the ring and determine shape and balance. Proportion of length of leg to length of back must be correct in order to display Breed type. Too long in the loin or too short on leg and the picture is spoiled. This youngster ticked all the boxes in my first assessment. To her correct outline she added the head qualities we all hope to create when we do a breeding: large, dark, round, frontally placed eyes accented by slight fill beneath; top skull which appears flat and a soft expression framed by use of ears to finish the picture. When on the move she held her topline and trotted smoothly with no wasted motion; level top line with correct tail carriage completed the picture.

Depth of quality in a litter is always a plus: this puppy shares many of the qualities which caught my eye when judging her sister. Excellent tricolors are difficult to produce. The expression on a tri can be easily spoiled by unfortunate markings: narrow blazes, poorly placed eyebrows or faded tan markings can ruin the expression on an otherwise worthy specimen. A tricolor with a straight, silky coat is preferable to the dense, woolly coat texture often found in this color. Solid tricolors are completely incorrect according to our Standard but are in the majority of tricolors at this moment. The clever use of openly marked Blenheims could help breeders break up color on today’s tricolors. Although coat color and texture are only a small part of the package, in large, competitive entries those characteristics can make a difference.
